As the weather becomes more autumnal, the Latvian National Museum of Natural History will host the much-awaited and beloved “Mushroom exhibition 2024” from October 4 to 6. This autumn the exhibition will honor the inclusion of the mushroom foraging tradition in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Last year the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage was supplemented with four new entries, including the foraging and use of mushrooms. The long history of mushroom exhibitions at the Latvian National Museum of Natural History, public interest and skill set show that mushroom picking is truly a national tradition. The organizers of the exhibition will go to the forests to collect the most interesting material and diverse species possible, and at the exhibition mushrooms will be arranged in different groups – edible, inedible, poisonous and protected.
Visitors may also bring mushrooms found in their garden, park or forest to the exhibition, as sometimes valuable specimens have come into the hands of mycologists in this way. All those interested will have the opportunity to receive consultations on different species of mushrooms.
The Latvian National Museum of Natural History mycologists advise – unknown mushrooms should not be consumed!
